Kaitiakitanga Energy Project
The Katiakitanga Energy Project team is leading a 20-year community regeneration plan for a cluster of hapu in the eastern Bay of Plenty.

The project team is Chris Karamea Insley, Moana Boyd, Tere Insley, Tatahi MacDonald and Marcia Insley.
What they’re doing and why
The group are raising awareness among their whanau, hapu and iwi around the risks and threats facing their taonga (treasures) and taking practical steps to safeguard and protect them for future generations.
They are currently setting challenging economic, social, environmental and cultural goals, with renewable energy emerging as one of the important and strategic infrastructure projects for the hapu. The team are planning to actively seek, adopt and utilise the best practices, technology and innovations available.
The objectives for the group are to develop:
“Ko te tumanako, ko te whenua me te tatou awa, me nga moana, te waiu mo nga uri i whakatipuranga” [Our lands, our rivers and our seas will sustain our future generations]

What’s next?
The team are working with Engineers without Borders New Zealand as partners for the Odyssey Design Challenge, an annual competition to provide engineering students with the changes to work on real projects to develop designs and solutions. The entries from the competition will provide the project team with concepts and detailed designs to consider with the community.
