Community Climate Action Hubs
Community leaders setting precedents for action on climate change in New Zealand.
The Hubs were a nationally linked set of virtual and regional centres for climate action. The Hubs project aimed to help develop and support leaders, to help create more local action, higher skills, stronger regional and national networks and more capacity to grow action in the future.
The Hubs project fueled the passion and expertise of individuals who already do extraordinary things. Hikurangi invested in a powerful source of action on climate change; community climate action leaders.
Scott Willis (Blueskin Bay Resilient Community Trust) is aiming for New Zealand’s first community owned windfarm and power company; Aaron Packard and Heidi Clark (350 Aotearoa) are establishing one of the world’s most active youth-led 350 climate movements right here in New Zealand; and Megan Salole and Nick Potter (Intersect) are growing a successful online network for purposeful young Kiwi professionals. Across five not for profit organisations, these are just five examples of the nine leaders who have now inspired 5,000 people to join their networks; launched over 180 public awareness events; delivered a 52-page feasibility plan for the first community owned wind farm; met face to face with other sectors of their community 394 times and much more.
These powerful individuals have also benefited from:
-Being part of a “club of doers” supported by facilitation and mentoring
-Skill-sharing on story telling and evaluation
-Training in the art of hosting – facilitating for collaboration
-Workshops on capacity building, entrepreneurism and business readiness, self assessment and priorities
-The elevator pitch to real business people, presentation skills and “dragon’s den” pitches to real angel investors
-Fundraising skills (for those who took up Fundraising Institute of New Zealand membership offer)
-Introductions to key resource people.
