Little Greenie

Thinking Ahead - What sort of legacy will we feel proud to hand on

Little Greenie

What’s the Goal?

Little Greenie is New Zealand’s most energy efficient house. It was the idea of one Kiwi who just wanted to build a low-maintenance simple and warm house. He did just that and in the process, outclassed all the experts.

The goal of this project is to transform NZ’s building practices by improving the supply of, and growing demand for, healthy, efficient and high-performance housing based on Little Greenie construction techniques.

What does success look like?

The project will be successful if there is comprehensive public awareness and buy-in of the benefits and desirability of high-performance, sustainable housing. There should also be an upgrade of trades training programmes and curricula to include a variety of Little Greenie inspired techniques, and adoption of Little Greenie techniques for construction by house builders throughout New Zealand.

How’s it going?

The aim is to pilot the new curriculum with WELTEC and CPIT trades training programmes starting from early 2013. Also, partnerships are being built and funds are being secured to construct two Little Greenie demonstration homes in Otaki and Christchurch. Additionally, education and engagement programmes are being developed to be delivered through the demonstration homes from 2013 onwards.

How are we involved?

Hikurangi is heavily involved in project development and facilitating support. We will broker financing for the demonstration homes and assist with the long-term strategic plan for the Little Greenie Design and Build Trust.
